Probate is the process of administering an estate. During this process, the assets and possessions that make up the estate are organized and distributed following the deduction of taxes and any outstanding debts.

Probate authenticates your will and confirms the appointment of the executor named in the document. This person is responsible for carrying out your last wishes as outlined in your will. However, to do this, the executor must apply for a grant of probate. A grant of probate is an authorization document the courts give to an executor, which allows them to conduct business on behalf of the estate.

When there is no will, the provincial government in British Columbia determines how to divide the estate among surviving relatives.
